Recession leads to relationship breakdown

A recent study published by Relate shows that couples worst affected by the recession are eight times as likely to suffer relationship breakdown.

A recent report entitled “Relationships, Recession and Recoveryreviewed a sample of 20,000 couples in the UK and grouped them according to their experiences of recession: job loss, optimism for the future, perception of current and future financial situation, working overtime, satisfaction with employment and being behind with bills. The couples were then assessed as to how relationships fared in each group.

Arguments over money are known to be a major cause of relationship problems and the findings of this report indicate that a ‘social recession’ has occurred alongside economic recession.  This shows a significant correlation between negative experiences of recession and deterioration in relationships.

The groups who felt the impact of recession most strongly, however, were significantly more affected in their relationships. The summary of the report states:-

“People who tended to be just about getting by financially, with high levels of unpaid overtime at work, yet who were optimistic about things changing (‘Getting by’) were almost twice as likely to have experienced relationship breakdown as the ‘Forging ahead’ group.

Those who retained their employment but endured high financial distress, high levels of arrears, high unpaid overtime, low job satisfaction and low optimism (‘Overworked and underpaid’) were more than three times as likely as the standard to have experienced relationship breakdown. “
